Dr. Virgil Gordon
Dr. Virgil Gordon, in his Last Will & Testament, bequeathed his estate to the Sealy Public Library, then operated by Austin County, for the purpose of constructing, establishing, furnishing, and maintaining a public library in Sealy, Texas. This bequest became vested with the Sealy Public Library on the conditions that the Sealy Public Library: 1.) Became incorporated as a Texas non-profit corporation, 2.) Empowered the co-executors of the Gordon Estate with the authority to establish a Board of Directors to manage the affairs of this corporation, and 3.) Agreed that the Library be named and perpetually called the “Virgil & Josephine Gordon Memorial Library.”
The Virgil & Josephine Gordon Memorial Library received its charter from the State of Texas on March 23, 1979, and W.F. Remmert, Dale Dycus, and Frank Koy were appointed as the initial Board of Directors. The 2023 Board of Directors of the Virgil & Josephine Gordon Memorial Library consists of: Terry Lynn Arnold, Chair, Katie Statham, Treasurer, Donna Mikulenka, Secretary, Rachel Zwahr, at large. The Library, at its present location, 917 North Circle Drive, was constructed on 1.182 acres of land in 1979. The remainder of the funds from the Gordon Estate were then invested by the Board of Directors, in accordance with the Last Will and Testament of Dr. Gordon, to generate revenue to run and maintain the Library.
